EdgeX Core Services Bridge OT and IT for IIoT Applications

Posted by Matt Newton on May 2, 2017 8:00:00 AM

In a previous post we covered EdgeX and its important role in building a standard platform for connecting edge computing systems, like Opto 22 SNAP PAC automation controllers, to the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

EdgeX connects OT and IT assets together, bridging between the physical world and the digital world through a loosely coupled microservice platform architecture. These microservices provide OT and IT devices, software, and services with a platform that provides connectivity and communications methods.

OptoNews: Connect serial devices to your groov Box with Admin 46

Posted by Jean Femia on Apr 12, 2017 5:15:24 PM

We've just released groov Admin 1.570.46, with a new feature some of you have been asking for: the ability to use data from serial devices with your GROOV AR1 Box.

Using a USB-to-serial converter and Node-RED software (included in the GROOV AR1), you can connect RS‑232, RS‑485, or RS‑422 serial devices (2‑wire or 4‑wire) to the groov Box.

From IoT to IIoT: an industry pivot

Posted by Matt Newton on Feb 23, 2017 8:00:00 AM

This week Opto 22 is exhibiting at the Open IoT Summit in Portland, Oregon. The IoT Summit is a Linux Foundation event, packed with a ton of technology workshops and product demos.

We also exhibited at the IoT Summit last year. It’s a great chance to connect with the Linux developer community and get their perspective on things, since it’s so much different from what a typical industrial automation professional is exposed to.

The rise of the IoT middleware platform

Posted by Matt Newton on Feb 21, 2017 8:00:00 AM

In a recent developer survey conducted by the Eclipse IoT Working Group, IEEE IoT, and Agile IoT, 40.8% of respondents indicated the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions they were either currently building or planning to build were IoT platforms or IoT middleware.

Almost every large IT or OT company today has some form of IoT platform or middleware, with the current number of self-described IoT platforms exceeding 150.

OptoNews Tip: New groov API section for developers

Posted by Jean Femia on Feb 15, 2017 5:56:53 PM

Our developer.opto22.com site gets a lot of traffic from developers working with SNAP PACs, groov, Node-RED, and industrial I/O for Raspberry Pi.

Since all Opto 22 products are designed on open standards, you have a variety of ways to interact with them and integrate with other systems. The developer site helps you do that.

OptoNews: New case study - University's power comes from the sun

Posted by Jean Femia on Feb 1, 2017 3:51:19 PM

Although we may think of Middle Eastern countries as being oil-rich, that description doesn't always apply. The country of Jordan, for example, has typically imported 96% of its energy from neighboring countries.

But Jordan has plenty of sun, and the government is committed to investing heavily in renewable energy.
