What you missed at ICC 2024

Posted by Dan White on Sep 26, 2024 8:08:20 AM

Get a recap of all the adventures that made last week's Ignition Community Conference a memorable occasion for all attendees.

Couldn’t make it to ICC 2024? You’re not alone—but you still have plenty of time to learn before Inductive Automation’s 8.3 release of Ignition—it’s still a few months away.

This year’s #ICCBreakthrough showcased advancements to the Ignition platform, real-world projects that tackled the same automation hurdles you’re facing every day, and a community of dedicated partners working together to drive the industry forward—starting with your success at the core.

8.3 Revelations at #ICCBreakthrough

If you’re an Ignition user—or if you’re interested in becoming one—these brand new features in Ignition 8.3 make it pretty compelling:

  • Power Historian: Uses QuestDB for faster and more efficient historical data storage.
  • Event Streams: Map event data to handlers, enabling filtering, batching, transforming, and pushing data.
  • Perspective Drawing Tool: Enhanced control over visualizations, allowing more customization and creativity.
  • Redesigned Gateway UX: Streamlined user experience with a new API for added functionality.
  • File-Based Configurations: Easier Git integration for better version control and collaboration.

Stay tuned for the official release, and get ready to experience these powerful features firsthand.

Opto 22’s ICC Involvement

For Opto 22, working with partners like Inductive Automation and with the Ignition community at large is a true privilege. Our involvement at ICC this year was bigger than ever:

  • Our own Benson Hougland, along with Rebecca Gillespie from Energy Systems Network, led a session on energy monitoring—showing how understanding energy data can reduce costs, improve equipment health, and meet ESG goals.
  • Opto 22 Developer Terry Orchard came onstage at the Build-a-Thon with Benson, to present the custom EPICStore Panels, designed specially for ICC.
  • Opto 22 Senior Application Engineer Garrick Reichert and I showcased the latest features in groov EPIC—including a brand new feature: Ignition Perspective running on EPIC’s front touchscreen display.
  • A dedicated team of Opto 22 engineers arrived early every day to exhibit groov EPICs and RIOs in our booth, showcasing off our global network of equipment, running Ignition Edge and publishing MQTT Sparkplug data to our own Ignition Cloud Edition instance, which you can still see hosted at: https://ice.groov.com
  • We even got Opto 22’s Director of Sales Arun Sinha out for the inaugural ICC Golf Scramble, where DSI Innovations’ Jason Dupre won a groov RIO after his team won the closest to the pin challenge on hole #2.

Goodbye Harris Center, Hello Sactown

In its twelfth year, and the final year hosted at the Harris Center for the Arts, I heard the phrase, “Best ICC ever” more than a few times.

But as the Ignition community has grown, so has the energy and number of people attending ICC. The Harris Center just can’t contain the excitement anymore. That’s why next year, ICC is moving to Sacramento’s newly remodeled convention center, giving everyone more space to connect and collaborate—not to mention enjoy all the amenities of beautiful downtown Sacramento.

Last Chance to Learn

Waiting a whole year for ICC 2025 will be tough, but that gives you plenty of time to brush up on the latest tech. Post-ICC workshops are still open. If you want to gain practical experience with Ignition Edge and MQTT that you can immediately apply to your projects, check out the Ignition Edge and MQTT Workshop.
