Outbound! Monitor OEM machinery with little to no IT involvement

Posted by Dan White on May 10, 2018 7:00:00 AM

Day in and day out, I work alongside machine builders who share a common problem: Once equipment has been shipped to a customer site, it is quite difficult to ensure that it is running properly and being adequately maintained.

I once heard the phrase, "even a Cadillac will fail prematurely if you drive it into a brick wall." Premature failure of the machinery (regardless of whose fault) can tarnish the image of the manufacturer, lead to increased warranty costs, and create tension between OEMs and end users.

But how do I (the machine builder) get access to the control system if it is operating inside a customer’s firewall?

New IoT Webinar: Live technologies demo

Posted by Jean Femia on Dec 7, 2017 11:18:56 AM

Is the Internet of Things (IoT) just a lot of hype, or can the IoT technologies we keep hearing about provide real value?

RESTful APIs, Node-RED, and MQTT are just some of the new technical terms we're all starting to learn.

If you'd like to see these technologies in action to understand how they might be useful for your applications, then join us for a new webinar on December 12.

Opto 22's Senior Applications Engineer Kyle Orman will demo these technologies and more. He'll show you how to exchange live data between real-world I/O and IoT platforms.

You'll see:

- IoT hardware that's proven in industrial locations
- RESTful APIs to get data from PAC controllers
- Examples of simple logic flows created with Node-RED
- Ignition Edge® OPC-UA drivers built into the  groov Box

Wine + IoT = yum + engineering fun

In my last post, I talked about beer and some hard deadlines at the end of a season. This time, let’s talk about wine and a different kind of season: harvest season!

During that Big Game, and since then, you might’ve seen some ads showing farmers in fields with iPads.

Well, I’ve met them.

Last week Opto 22 exhibited at the Automation Conference in Chicago. It was a great event, with a lot of interesting material presented and some really cool new technology demonstrated.

I conducted two workshops for attendees while I was there, both on Rapid IIoT Application Development with Node-RED, RESTful APIs, and MQTT.

A Survey of Big Data Analytics Software

Posted by Matt Newton on May 18, 2017 8:09:57 AM

In a previous post we covered time series data.

We talked about how process automation and control data can feed our big data applications and cloud-based software platforms, to build Industrial Internet of Things applications.

In this post we'll take a look at how time series data can be used to develop time series models.
