The 32nd annual Control Engineering Engineers’ Choice Awards shined a light on 26 categories of control, instrumentation, and automation products, revealing the best of those introduced in 2018. Winners were voted on by the Control Engineering magazine print and digital audience. As announced earlier this year, Opto 22's groov EPIC was the award winner in the Industrial Internet of Things connectivity category.

groov EPIC Security Series, Part 2: What's a Firewall?
Ever notice how emergency exits in a building open outward? Then, to keep the building secure, they are usually locked from the outside. You can get out easily enough, but you can’t get in that way.
However, on a building’s main front entrance, the door often swings in so you can enter. Typically, there is a security guard or perhaps a receptionist there to check your ID and keep an eye on the comings and goings.

groov EPIC Security Series, Part 1: Dual Network Interfaces
Trusted and untrusted: when it comes to people, it can be hard to know someone at first pass. You need some time to build a picture of the person.
When it comes to networking, it’s a little more cut and dried. You either know who’s on a network or you don’t.
Can it really be that simple? Is there really a way on a groov EPIC to keep those you don’t trust away from those you do?

EPIC is more than just a name; it is an acronym describing the primary capabilities in the system. In this blog post, we’ll look more in depth at the P for programmability.
With today’s traditional PLC systems, you typically have one fixed development system with a limited set of tools. This is a burden that most engineers have had to suffer with. Oftentimes, you have to use inefficient workarounds to programmatically accomplish what is needed for different components of a given industrial automation application.

New white paper explains Edge Programmable Industrial Controllers
A new kind of industrial controller simplifies and secures automation and IIoT projects, while reducing cost and complexity.
We've recently published a new white paper that explains why and how Edge Programmable Industrial Controllers (EPICs) are the solution for today's–and tomorrow's–automation applications.
For today's controls engineers, new demands to use and share data present three main challenges: security, complexity, and expense.

This latest video in our Automation 101 series provides a deeper dive and explanation of the MQTT central server, or the "broker".
As you recall from previous posts, the industrial MQTT communication protocol is a powerful tool that allows you to exchange device data freely among devices and applications, with little or no IT involvement. Its simplicity and flexibility make it a popular choice for today's IIoT applications.
