Your IoT middleware checklist

Posted by Matt Newton on Mar 2, 2017 8:00:00 AM

In a recent developer survey conducted by the Eclipse IoT Working Group, IEEE IoT, and Agile IoT, 40.8% of respondents indicated that the IoT solutions they were either currently building or planning to build are IoT platforms or IoT middleware.

Almost every large IT or OT company today has some form of IoT platform or middleware.

In fact, right now there are over 150 self-described IoT platforms in the market today. Not neccessarily created equally.

OptoNews: New version of Node-RED for groov Box

Posted by Jean Femia on Mar 1, 2017 4:02:04 PM

We've just released version 3 of Node-RED for the GROOV-AR1 groov Box.

Node-RED is an open-source software tool for digitally wiring together hardware devices (like the groov Box), APIs (application program interfaces), and online services.

If you have a GROOV-AR1, Node-RED is included starting with groov Admin 44.

Debugging your industrial network with Wireshark

Posted by Matt Newton on Feb 28, 2017 8:00:00 AM

Note that the information below applies not only to PCs, PACs, and PLCs, but to pretty much any industry-standard compliant network device.

There are a ton of great network analysis tools out there today that you can pay huge sums of money for. But a go-to industry standard, and my tool of choice for everyday network troubleshooting, is a free piece of software called Wireshark.

From IoT to IIoT: an industry pivot

Posted by Matt Newton on Feb 23, 2017 8:00:00 AM

This week Opto 22 is exhibiting at the Open IoT Summit in Portland, Oregon. The IoT Summit is a Linux Foundation event, packed with a ton of technology workshops and product demos.

We also exhibited at the IoT Summit last year. It’s a great chance to connect with the Linux developer community and get their perspective on things, since it’s so much different from what a typical industrial automation professional is exposed to.

Must-have cables and adapters to maximize OEE & connect OT to IT

Posted by Matt Newton on Feb 16, 2017 8:00:00 AM

Almost everyone in the industrial automation, process control, and factory automation industries is concerned with keeping their equipment up and running.

Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is a key metric for understanding how the factory is performing.  And part of keeping things running is keeping things communicating.

OptoNews: Opto 22 helps CAT provide power for the "Big Game"

Posted by Jean Femia on Feb 15, 2017 6:01:16 PM

Did you watch the Big Game on Sunday, February 5?

Not only was it a great game, with the outcome in doubt till a first-ever overtime settled it, but also... power for the Fox Sports television broadcast never failed.

Pretty important, right?

OptoNews Tip: New groov API section for developers

Posted by Jean Femia on Feb 15, 2017 5:56:53 PM

Our developer.opto22.com site gets a lot of traffic from developers working with SNAP PACs, groov, Node-RED, and industrial I/O for Raspberry Pi.

Since all Opto 22 products are designed on open standards, you have a variety of ways to interact with them and integrate with other systems. The developer site helps you do that.

Build Your IIoT Application with Dell and Opto 22

Posted by Matt Newton on Feb 14, 2017 8:00:00 AM

As noted in Opto 22’s recent edge computing technology primer, one of the key problems currently facing the IIoT is Internet bandwidth limitations. We’re talking about connecting billions of sensors to networks that were never designed to handle that kind of traffic.

I can remember the painful days of dial up Internet connectivity when millions of people started connecting their PCs to the Internet through tiny little phone lines, watching file transfers drag on and on for hours.
